‘Pepsi’ bezel · circa 1971 · private cross-border sale
Negotiate the price and make the purchase conditional on independent physical inspection. Fund only through escrow. Decline if the seller supports neither.
Two voices run through this document and never blur. The advisor speaks in serif — judgement, reasoning, recommendation. The record speaks in mono — facts, sources, values, confidence. Where they meet, the serif claim always carries a mono trace back to what it rests on.
No level asserts authenticity. Assay does not authenticate watches or guarantee genuineness — these marks describe what the evidence supports and where it stays silent.
This is not a question of real or counterfeit. Nothing in the provided media indicates a forgery, and the reference reads as a correct 1675 from the early 1970s. The value question is how original — and here the evidence and the seller disagree.
The dial presents as a later Rolex service dial and the hands appear relumed; the seller describes the watch as “all original.” That single unresolved conflict is worth roughly $6,000–$10,000 of value, so it must be settled by inspection before funds move, not assumed in either direction. Priced and safeguarded correctly, this is a sound buy.
Each attribute below is stated at the confidence the evidence supports — and no higher. Tap any E-ref to trace it to source.
Assay did not open the caseback or handle the watch. Identification rests on provided media and one service document; movement and internal parts are Unverified until inspection.
The spine of the dossier. Every finding above and every number below points back to a line here.
Reference “1675” legible in the engraving between the lower lugs.
Serial reads 2.9xx xxx (final digits soft in the frame); consistent with c. 1971 production.
Matte black dial. Minute-track spacing and coronet font read as a later Rolex service dial rather than a 1971 original. Hand lume is uniform and bright against markedly aged, cream-toned dial plots — an age mismatch consistent with a relume.
Red/blue insert with even fade; font weight and the fount-well form suggest a later production insert, not one original to a 1971 case.
78360 folded-link bracelet on 501B end links (period-correct type). Clasp stamped; noticeable stretch between links, consistent with honest wear.
Lugs read full with bevels present; no obvious signs of heavy over-polishing in the available frames.
Independent service: clean, lubricate, new crystal and gaskets. A line item “Zifferblatt / Zeiger” (dial / hands) supports later intervention on exactly the components in question.
Watch described as “all original, one owner from new, never polished.” Recorded as the counterparty’s assertion; it conflicts with E3 and E7.
Prior public sale post supports a 2015 acquisition by the seller; does not establish the chain before that date.
States Cal. 1575, running well, +6 s/day. Not independently verified; caseback not opened.
Original guarantee, booklets and box reported lost. No punched papers to corroborate reference, date, or first dealer independently of the watch itself.
On the media: presents as a genuine 1675 that has been serviced with a replacement dial and relumed hands — plausibly Rolex service parts, not a counterfeit redial. Originality-sensitive value cannot be settled without the watch in hand.
Surfaced, not smoothed over. These are the four things that move the decision.
The seller states “all original”; the media indicate a service dial and relumed hands. This is the single largest swing in value and the reason inspection is a condition, not a courtesy.
Reference, production date, and first sale cannot be corroborated independently of the watch. Common for vintage, but it removes a layer of cross-checking.
Caseback not opened; caliber, service condition, and any replaced internal parts are unconfirmed from media alone.
Insert appears later than the case. Low-cost to correct and immaterial to function, but it further contradicts the “all original” framing.
The watch is reported running, last serviced in 2019 (). Three paths, depending on how far you take originality:
Assay recommends carrying a $1,500 service reserve into the decision regardless of path.
The ask of ≈ $20,100 sits at the top of the service-dial band and below the original-dial band — i.e. priced as if partly original. The three sets below are not interchangeable; which one applies depends on inspection.
Limitations: small heterogeneous sample (n≈6 close comps over 18 months), condition adjusted subjectively, private-sale prices under-reported. Treat as a band, not a price.
Signals, not a verdict on the person. Read them together, then decide the safeguards.
Modelled at the suggested target price. Estimates; the duty line depends on the broker and declared value.
All four options, stated plainly, with the condition that selects each. Assay's recommended path is marked.
Buy at or near the ask now. Not advised as-is — the ask is priced toward an originality the evidence does not yet support.
Reprice to the service-dial, no-papers reality. Open ~$16,000, target ~$17,000, citing E3 / E7 / E12 and the comparable band.
Independent physical examination before any funds are released. Resolves the originality conflict and the movement gap that media cannot.
Walk away. Reasonable and low-regret if the safeguards are refused.
Assay reviewed 14 photographs, one 2019 service invoice, and the seller's written representations. Assay did not physically examine the watch, open the caseback, or test the movement. Originality assessments from photographs are provisional and were reviewed by M. Faber, independent vintage-Rolex specialist on the Assay panel ().
Assay does not authenticate watches and issues no guarantee of authenticity. This dossier describes what the available evidence supports and where it is silent; it is decision support, not a certificate. Findings are current as of the preparation date and the media supplied. Independent physical inspection is a stated condition of the recommendation.
